Having a well-stocked first aid kit and emergency phone numbers
for your avian vet is an excellent idea. We like to think that we
always have our pet birds best interest at heart but there are so
many dangers that our pet birds can get into, that's why it is
important to become aware of the most common dangers in our
home so that we can avoid an emergency situation.
1. People who don’t see it may injure a pet bird walking on the floor,
a pet bird may be accidentally closed in a door.
2. If a bird is frightened, it may mistake a window or mirror for
open spaces.
3. Those little stinkers love to hide under and behind Recliners, fold
out beds and under cushions.
4. You pet bird will love to hid in a stack of dirty cloths...didn't you
just put in a load to wash?
5. Your pet bird will follow you around the house..be aware of its
presence when you go into the kitchen and put on a kettle of boiling
water.
6. A fire in the fireplace could be fatal...even if your pet bird never
gets close to the fire...accidents can happen!
7. Non-stick cookware and other household items possessing a non-
stick surface can be toxic to birds
8. This is a no brainier but cigarette, cigar and pipe smoke can cause
secondary bacterial infections or can result in death to your beloved
pet bird.
9. Many common disinfectants and household cleaning agents
release fumes that can be toxic or fatal to birds. Chlorine bleach,
and ammonia can have dangerous vapors. Perfume, deodorant,
hairspray and any pump spray or aerosol can cause respiratory
problems or even death.
10. Any type of heater with inadequate ventilation can be very
harmful or even deadly to your pet bird.
11. Chocolate is very toxic to pet birds, also Caffeine, and Avocado’
s, especially the skin and seed.
12.Some houseplants can also be toxic to pet birds. Research
carefully so that dangerous plants are not introduced into your pet
bird’s environment.
13. It is dangerous for pet birds to have direct contact with their
owner's mouths. We carry bacteria and fungi that can cause serious
infection, or even death, in our birds. Pet Birds should never be
kissed with an open mouth, nor should birds be allowed any contact
with the owner's teeth, tongue, lips or saliva.
14. Exotic Birds, while from warm tropical climates, cannot tolerate
excessive heat. If you place their cage outdoors in the morning for
fresh air, it is important that you make sure that your pet bird does
not end up in direct sun by the afternoon or else it could develop
hypothermia and die.
